THE GATES
In 2005 Christo and Jeanne-Claude installed 7503 gates
into Central Park. A barrage of orange fabric ("saffron")
invaded the park. I wan't a huge fan but I did take my
daughter Ava to see the gates on a beautiful snowy
morning. The park covered with 7-8 inches of new snow and
was gorgeous despite the alien saffron presence
and people were out in droves: slogging through the snow,
sight-seeing, jogging (!) and walking their dogs.
We made our way from the R train to the 57th
street entrance and walked up and around eventually
exiting near 61 st to return home soaking wet as a steady
sleet made filming difficult.
I edited together the footage mainly as a accompaniment
to the music. Looking at it now it seems I was more
infatuated with "the gates" than I actually was. Central
Park in the snow is something to behold and it was the
spirit of my 6 year old daughter's excitement that
inspired this project.
