This piece was commissioned by the Hollaender Ensembe and debued November 14, 1998 at Weil Hall in New York City.
Archie ("Arch") Hammer is a character from Rod Serling's Twilight Zone entitled, "The Four of Us Are Dying." Hammer, a small time conman, has the ability to transform his face which he does using photographs, news clippings, and posters as inspiration. He meets his end when he mistakenly transforms himself into the derelict boxer son of an angry news stand operator who shoots him down when he mistakes Hammer's complete ignorance of his identity and past as the last straw, the last insult from an ungrateful son.
The quintet is worked from a 10 note row and each of the nine "disguises" has a new tempo and reworks the basic material in a different way. The piece accelerates with each movement starting at approximately 60 bpm and ending at 140 bpm (accelerating 10 bpm per movement). The orchestration of each movement also changes as the piece starts with 5 players and with each succeeding movement one less player is allowed to play. The middle movement is a solo and from here one player is added with each movement until all the players are working again in the finale. --Erik Friedlander, November 11, 1998
