The music on the record is inspired by the murky history of absinthe and its use as a brain-bending hallucinogen. This concept was sparked by my viewing of Pablo Picasso’s mysterious absinthe glass sculptures at MoMA back in 2015. On first look, the glasses were kind of pretty, innocent. But as I looked more closely I saw that Picasso had torn away the fronts of the glasses, revealing their insides. Was Picasso commenting on the effects of absinthe? Does it tear away one's exterior? Artemisia has tracks that are hypnotic meditations on obsession, and others that optimistically chase euphoria, pursuing the "green fairy." Akino Kondoh's album artwork will be seductive and haunting, and the deluxe box set will be a beautiful thing to hold and have in your vinyl collection.

The Band

Friedlander assembled a new band for this project, The Throw, featuring Friedlander on cello, Uri Caine on piano, Mark Helias on bass, and Ches Smith on drums. “I put the band together originally for a gig at The Stone and I was blown away by the chemistry,” Friedlander remarks. The quartet convened in May of 2017, and over a productive two day session at The Bunker in Brooklyn - helmed by longtime collaborator and engineer Scott Solter - cut the tracks that make up the new album. The band also experimented with improvising with electronic loops created by Friedlander. These can be heard in ‘La Fée Verte’, ‘Drop by Drop’, and the bonus track ‘Audacious Curl’.

After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see them as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, and that is the most horrible thing in the world.

deluxe box-set

I’ve spent the last year writing and recording Artemisia with my new band Throw A Glass, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so strongly about one of my projects. To celebrate the release I'm creating a deluxe box set with three 10" LPs and a booklet, all housed in a slick slipcase box that will feel like a work of art itself. The box-set will feature art work by Akino Kondoh and design from Vanessa Maynard.

We're currently working on the details of the box set. The latest update of the artwork from Akino is at the top of the page
