Sto confers with Sato, Andy, and and recording engineer Jon Rosenberg, SIAM president Mike Landy and I look on.

Stomu Takeishi on Bass.

topaz1_stomic

We used three tracks to record Sto's sound. One direct, a mic on the amp and this mic pictured here to get some of the string action sound.

topaz1_stoplays

Andy Laster on Alto Saxophone.

Jon Rosenberg worked with Andy to get the sound Andy preferred. We tried three or four different microphones and ended up with the Neuman M-49.

topaz1_andyplays2

Satoshi Takeishi on Percussion.

topaz1_satolistens

Sato's kit is varied. We ended up using 6 tracks to record the whole kit (see track sheet). Sato was enclosed in a isolation booth so there would be limited bleed into the cello and saxophone mics.

topaz1_satoplays1

Erik Friedlander on Cello.

topaz1_erikplays

Mike Landy borrowed an incredible Telefunken mic to record the cello. Jon Rosenberg and I experimented with a Neuman U87, which I like very much, and a Schoeps, which I use in live settings. Neither had the same warmth.
